India will host the 2019 Women’s International Cricket Council (WICC) Women’s Under-19 World Cup, the International Cricket Board (ICB) announced on Thursday.
The WICC will host women’s cricket for the first time at the 2019 World Cup at the newly renovated Nehru Stadium in Kolkata, the organisers said.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the first to be held in India, which is the country that hosted the last edition of a Women’s game in 2014.
India is the second-highest-ranked cricket nation after Pakistan with a ranking of 189 in the ICC rankings, followed by Zimbabwe at 173 and Afghanistan at 162.
The last Women’s world cup was held in South Africa in 2010.
The 2019 WICF women’s team is expected to field an international side for the inaugural edition of Women’s cricket, the organisation said.
It is a joint venture between the Indian cricket board and the International Women’s Cricket Federation (IWCF).
The 2019 Women and Girls World Cup is the sixth edition of this event which was held from September 15 to 20, 2018 in India.
